Fighting the Anti-Refugee Bill

(Reposted from Yorkshire and Humberside Regional City of Sanctuary Newsletter)

Parliament is currently debating the Nationality and Borders Bill. The proposed legislation will create two-tier system of refugees, which would deny asylum to people on the basis of how they arrived, as opposed to whether they actually need protection. It scraps the UK’s international commitments, and threatens the Refugee Convention. It will push already vulnerable people into destitution and danger while creating even more delay and misery in an already broken asylum system.

Actions you can take:

Write/contact/meet your MP to express your concerns about the bill. Check out templates and resources from Asylum Matters and Refugee Action for inspiration. Encourage families, friends and neighbours to write to MPs as well. Families Together UK has put together a useful briefing document here which you can share with your MPJoin the Together with Refugees Coalition.

Hold a rally and show your support for refugees. CoS groups from Ripon, Richmond and Harrogate gathered recently to show that North Yorkshire welcomes people seeking sanctuary. Take photos and share on social media.

Share positive stories about refugees in your communities with local media outlets. IMIX has useful seasonal guidance here
