May Update

Dear All,

As agencies and friends of Wakefield District City of Sanctuary we are aware that many of you are being asked to source clothing, shoes and toiletries for people in Initial Accommodation; namely Urban House and the local Hotels.

Wakefield District City of Sanctuary runs a Clothing Store for people in Initial Accommodation and for Asylum Seekers in the local community. Currently, we have funding for clothing and footwear. If you email or ring, we will do our best to ensure people get the required items. We are also supporting people in Initial Accommodation and dispersed accommodation with things like games, toys, books, crafts and activities.

Please be aware that due to the high risk of self-harm, we do not send in items like razors, scissors or nail clippers. (These items, or alternatives are provided if residents ask at the reception.) We have been asked not to deliver cooked food, as this also carries a potential risk if people store food in their rooms.

During the lockdown the management of Urban House is trying to minimise the number of outside people being in physical contact with the residents, even if social distancing is observed. Though this is difficult, the aim is to keep the vulnerable community of asylum seekers as safe as possible.

We are suggesting to all outside agencies and individuals that if they wish to donate items during the lockdown, that they make arrangements with the Clothing Store, or bring items to the Clothing Store, and we will deliver things to the Initial Accommodation. At all Initial Accommodation places, we have a system in place which respects social distancing arrangements and which minimises outside contact with residents and staff.

As a local charity we appreciate many agencies and people want to offer support and comfort to people in the asylum process. At this crucial time in the pandemic we feel that working together will help keep the vulnerable people in Initial Accommodation as safe as possible.

On behalf of Wakefield District City of Sanctuary Trustees, many thanks.

All good wishes, Linda
